Frequently Asked Questions

Why do fruit and vegetables go off so quickly?

Fruit and vegetables lose moisture and sweetness as soon as they’re picked. They are great at the Farmer’s Market, but a week later - not so great. Lettuce goes limp, beans get bitter and slimy, and the broccoli turns yellow around the edges.

People put them in a plastic bag to buy them, get home and shove them in the fridge still in the plastic bag and curse them several days later when they pull them out of that plastic bag to find them to be slippery, slimy, dehydrated and heading for the bin or the compost!

That means we waste food and money. So why does this happen?

Vegetables and fruit are alive. They absorb water and breathe, just like us. But when you wrap them in plastic and put them in fridge, they absorb toxins from the plastic wrapping or containers.

As well as polluting our food, plastic bags and containers suffocate our fresh food creating the perfect environment for bacterial decay.  Which means plastic bags and containers decrease the life and quality of our fresh plant-based foods and increase food waste. Our fruit and vegetables wilt, they go slimy, and we throw them out.   We discuss why plastic doesn't make sense in this video.

Even if you don’t put them in plastic, your produce still suffers. The fridge is like a cold, dry dehydrator and sucks the goodness from your fruit and vegetables. They turn bitter and they get old, fast.

Our fresh foods are worth more than that to us!  We need to treat them carefully and respectfully for our own benefit because fresh food has the greatest capacity to support our wellness when it is alive and full of enzymes.

Do I need to a separate Fresh Produce Enhancer for each type of vegetable or fruit?

We suggest you mix and match produce in the Fresh Produce Enhancer according to moisture and weight requirements.

           • Seeded vegetables (technically fruits) – have your Fresh Produce Enhancer moist - wrung out
           • Non-seeded vegetables/leafy greens – Your Fresh Produce Enhancer can be almost dripping wet!
           • Carrots, beetroots, hard vegetables go together
           • Delicate salad leaves should have their own bag
           • Celery, kale, tall vegetables – stored together.

Can I use the Fresh Produce Enhancer if I don’t have space in my crisper?

You can place your fruit and vegetables on the lower fridge shelves if you don’t have any space in your crisper. You will find that they need re-wetting more frequently when not in the crisper.

Your Fresh Produce Enhancers are also great when you go camping and keep your fruit and vegetables crisp, crunchy and flavoursome for much longer in your caravan or boat too.

How many Fresh Produce Enhancers do I need for my household?

          • For 1-2 people in your household – we suggest at least 4 Fresh Produce Enhancers. 2-3 keeping your fruit                   and vegetables crisp, crunchy and flavoursome in the fridge and 1-2 in the wash.
          • Small family – we suggest 6 Fresh Produce Enhancers. 3-4 in the fridge and 2-3 in the wash rotation.
          • Large family - we suggest 8 Fresh Produce Enhancers. 4-5 in the fridge and 3-4 in the wash rotation.

Can I use the Fresh Produce Enhancer for all types of fruit & vegetables?

Yes, even herbs and cut vegetables!  No longer will you need to wrap half a capsicum in plastic wrap!  We routinely keep cut capsicum, carrots, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers and more in our Fresh Produce Enhancers.  Asparagus loves being kept in a rolled up Fresh Produce Enhancer, as does coriander, parsley and dill.  The only produce that takes a little more attention to care for is cucumbers, and to a lesser extent zucchinis, and basil – they keep well in a Fresh Produce Enhancer but like the fabric to be wrung out well and need to be checked at least every second day (unlike broccoli, which you can store in a Fresh Produce Enhancer for half a week before you check it!).

Are Fresh Produce Enhancers good to use in my caravan, camping, or boating?

Your Fresh Produce Enhancers are great when you go camping and keep your fruit and vegetables crisp, crunchy and flavoursome for much longer in your caravan or boat too. Just wet them the same as you do when using them in your fridge.

Keeping your vegetables fresh, crisp and flavoursome

How do I use my Fresh Produce Enhancer?

Use the all-natural reusable Fresh Produce Enhancers in the fridge. They will rehydrate your produce and keep your fruit and vegetables crisp, crunchy and flavoursome for at least double the time, if not more than, they normally last without using a Fresh Produce Enhancer.

Just wet the pouch, place your veggies inside and pop it in the fridge. Re-wet when it starts to dry out.

4 simple steps – so easy!

  1. Wet your Fresh Produce Enhancer – pop it under the tap and wet thoroughly, then squeeze out the excess  water.
  2. Place your fresh vegetables inside the pouch and store in the fridge crisper. Re-wet whenever the pouch starts to dry out (place it under the tap or sprinkle with water in the crisper).
  3. Enjoy your flavoursome enhanced vegetables.
  4. Wash your Fresh Produce Enhancer regularly and re-use over and over again.

You can also use your Fresh Produce Enhancer outside the fridge. Some of our customers like using them to prolong the life of sourdough bread, bananas and other produce. Mushrooms store well in the fridge in a dry Fresh Produce Enhancer too.

Using your Fresh Produce Enhancers

Why do we make the Fresh Produce Enhancer?

We are driven by our unwavering belief that pure, natural, plant-based fresh foods form the foundation of our health and are worth protecting.

It makes no sense to store high quality fresh fruit, vegetables and leafy greens in plastic, a substance that is made from an unknown concoction of chemicals that are deadly for the planet, for people, for animals and for our fresh food.

The world is full of plastic and fast food. You may not know that it’s full of ‘fast’, chemically-laden textiles too. We’ve created an all-natural, chemical free storage solution for your plant-based fresh foods because your wellness depends on clean, healthy, vibrant fresh food.

Our specially woven hemp fabric is made without a drop of chemical, creating a pure natural life enhancing environment for your plant based fresh food in the fridge.  Get ready for naturally inspiring and powerfully healthy fresh fruit, vegetables, herbs and leafy greens.

We’re driven by our desire for vibrant health, our toxin-free living ideals and the memory of having thrown out way too much wilted, yellowed, bitter tasting food. That’s why we created a plastic-free, non-toxic, pure and natural way to have plant based fresh foods thriving and unpolluted in the fridge.  Naturally inspiring and powerfully healthy - Fresh Produce Enhancer.

We discuss the stages of yarn preparation in this video below.

How does using the Fresh Produce Enhancer
help the environment and reduce waste?

Using a Fresh Produce Enhancer is a small but easy step you can take on the journey to assisting in reducing food waste, stopping plastic filling our oceans, and preventing food and plastic going to landfill.

By reducing your plastic use and the amount of food wasted in your household you are helping to make a significant impact. Congratulations!

Why do you use hemp fabric?

We spent many years creating the safest, cleanest, most ethical answer to wilted produce and the plastic storage problem. We considered cotton, until we found that 95% of all cotton grown is genetically modified. We didn't want that for our future or yours.

We selected hemp because of its amazing qualities. Hemp has natural anti-bacterial properties - that’s why it has traditionally been used for food storage for centuries, long before refrigeration.

Hemp has higher yields per hectare than cotton, it uses 75% less water than cotton and it doesn’t need artificial fertilisers or pesticides, making it a great environmental solution.

Our quest was to make sure hemp maintained all its natural properties in the process from plant to fabric. We constantly challenge ourselves at every stage to ensure the highest quality, safest answer to storing your fresh produce.

Hemp is great and our specially woven hemp fabric is extra-special because it’s chemical-free from start to finish. It’s unbleached, undyed, and untreated, making it 100% natural and safe.

Is there any Australian hemp?

Currently Australia has neither the quantity nor the technology to make quality hemp textiles.  We are members of the Australian Hemp Alliance and keep up to date with changes in our industry and hopefully we will be able to use Australian produced and manufactured hemp fabric in the future. Unfortunately, Australian hemp fabric is still some time away.  We discuss this in this video below.

Where are the Fresh Produce Enhancers made?

We are proud to be working in partnership with a community of hemp-weaving artisans in rural China who uphold a beautiful, environmentally-respectful tradition. These craftspeople have a 2000-year-old tradition and together, we are rightly proud, and protective, of their skills. They carefully process the raw hemp, spin it into yarn and weave it into our special fabric.

The textile industry in China is the best in the world and is the largest in overall production and exports. China is one of the very few countries that didn’t restrict industrial hemp growing after World War II. Read more here.

Why are we so passionate about sustainability?

Maintaining sustainable and ethical practices is extremely important to us personally, in our business and encouraging our community and our customers to recycle, reuse and reduce. We are passionate about looking after our planet through reducing plastic, household food waste and plastic packaging.

We choose sustainably grown hemp fibre for our Fresh Produce Enhancers, and we are not prepared to compromise quality in any way. Hemp is more sustainable and ethical to grow than other fibre crops, especially cotton. No chemicals are used, far less water is required to grow the crop, it has good soil rejuvenation properties, is faster growing and is more profitable for the small family farmers who grow the hemp for our Fresh Produce Enhancers.

Another major reason we chose hemp is its strength, durability, and natural antibacterial properties.

Our product is designed to be washed and reused over and over again for a very, long time. The durable, pure hemp fabric and the double stitched side seams make our product unbreakable for its purpose. We have even had our seams strength tested - they can withstand 14 kilos of pressure!

We believe in high ethical standards and are proud to be working with and supporting a traditional rural Chinese community. While completely handcrafted natural textiles are still a big part of their community, they have adopted modern processes and take their passion for making pure, natural textiles into the age of machine yarning and looming. They pioneered the chemical-free process necessary to retain the integrity of their tradition and we are delighted to continue to support them.

Our hemp fabric is processed from raw fibre to fabric by an ethical family-owned enterprise in rural China. The family enterprise we are proud to work with support their local community, upholding their artisan traditions that span over 2000 years, ensure safe working conditions, reward staff appropriately (including appropriate pay, accommodation, and meals) and refuse to use any chemical treatments or products.

The natural colour, softness and texture of our hemp fabric is the achieved in the natural processes of using heat, pressure and enzymes and chemical free yarning, ensuring it is pure and contains no toxins.

Has the fabric been bleached or dyed?

Absolutely not!  What you see in the Fresh Produce Enhancer fabric is pure, clean hemp fabric, free of chemicals.
Most people are surprised to learn that it is common for hemp fabric to be dyed a light brown colour to make it look 'more natural'.  We discuss this in this video below.

Hemp is great and our specially woven hemp fabric is extra-special because it’s chemical-free from start to finish. It’s unbleached, undyed and untreated, making it 100% natural and safe.
